I just put a deposit on a 2002 M3, pending a PPI from the local BMW guru. The car has 122K miles on it, but the price is only $11K. It looks pretty clean to me, but the PPI will be the deciding factor. The dealer is offering a PRco Open Road drive train warranty - $2500 for 24 months or 24K miles. Should I go for it? The main issues I'm worried about are VANOS and rod bearings. On the other hand, Dr. Vanos sells a rebuilt unit for around $1500. And I can change the rod bearings myself pre-emptively for just the cost of the parts. What are my chances of escaping any major drive train issues for that length of time/mileage? I will probably do a few track days in it but I won't be pushing it to the absolute limit (I'll run out of talent first )
The $2500 cost of warranty is best saved in bank or invested, and withdrawn as needed for DIY repairs.
Those warranty co.'s are only out to make money, just skim thru their exclusions section of the documents.
OP you want to double/triple read inclusions and exclusions on service contract. The key questions I have asked extended warranty servicers before :
1) Deductible cost
2) Labor rates
3) Max coverage/limit of liability (generally capped to car market value not how much you owe or paid for it)
4) Cancellation and refund policy (should be prorated if you sell or don't want coverage anymore)

I have not seen any rod Bearing problems since BMW did the two recalls and I have seen one vanos bolt problem
