    E36 M3 ST4 Build

    Hi everyone,

I'm starting this thread to chronicle my new build. I'm hoping this can be a forum of discussion and a helpful resource for anyone doing a similar build in the future.

    Build started: Jan 24th, 2020
    Thread started: March 23, 2020
    Last update: March 23, 2020

I've been building an E36 for almost 4 years, which started as my daily and has slowly become a dedicated HPDE car. I decided to start a new build for a few reasons:
    • Wanted a safer car, with a full cage
    • Previous car was a long time build with shortcuts and mistakes
    • Wasn't ever fully confident in the car with the issues it has had in the past
    • Wanted a WBS VIN

Yes, the old chassis could have been used as a starting point, but I also just wanted to start fresh. Pic of the old car:

The new chassis was, IMO, a great and rare find. 1995 M3 Coupe, 5spd and slicktop with no options on it. As close as you can get to a LTW without spending $XXX,XXX . The car had 217k miles, ran great, and cost me $4500. Needed a rear shock mount and new exhaust hangers, and it was a nice daily driver for a few weeks.

Look forward to seeing this develop! Saw you listing parts from the orange car for sale and figured something must be going on. Why ST4 instead of GTS2/3/4? Not super familiar with the NASA classing so just curious. Thinking about a SE46 build myself.

I was originally planning on targeting GTS2/3/4, but there just aren't enough racers in the class here in NorCal. Thankfully I found that out and decided to switch before any work started!

I'd love to do SE46 or even Spec3, but same issue here.

I started in GTS2 with my '99 and bumped it up to ST4 after my local track decided to consolidate down to ST classes to improve group size. But I started with a caged and fairly well prepped car to begin with. Very ambitious of you to start with a street car. Will be interested to follow your build - good luck!

Thanks I'm swapping over a lot of parts from my HPDE car (mainly drivetrain + suspension). The goal is to build a somewhat competitive car and develop myself as a driver. Will it be a championship-winning car right when its running? Nope! But the goal is to get there over the next 2 years or so. Likely longer now due to the state of the world.

Sorry for the lack of updates, have been super busy with work. I've finally found a good solution for image hosting, so I'm hoping to get the whole thread updated tonight.

Photo embed test. Apparently a public Facebook album is the best way to do this now, thanks to Photobucket being a paid service and Flickr being terrible.

The day I picked up the car, Jan 24 2020. 1995 M3, five speed, slicktop, no options. Basically a LTW without the 6 figure price tag...and with 217k miles! Ran great, paint sucks but nbd.

Alright...I skipped a few steps in terms of thread updates

The car is 99% complete and is going to be aligned, setup, and inspected next week.

I will at some point, I think I have 1000+ photos of the full build process. I just need to find a good way to post + annotate them.

As of couple days ago, the car is "done" with an official race car logbook and approved tech inspection. A few small items to finish up, and then its on to Sonoma Raceway next weekend. Thank you to TC Design in Campbell for helping with the last few steps!

I've started a new build thread on Grassroots Motorsports, mostly due to ease of image uploads. Check it out: https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/fo.../185737/page1/

At some point I'll try to move things over to BF
