2008 535xi Wagon Sunroof water leak. All the control modules are fried. Suggestion?

Sunroof seal failed and too much water was sent down the drain to the rear. This drain got clogged. excess water went under the spare compartment to all the electrical system:
fried a series of control modules and relays.
Tire pressure, rear air suspension, etc etc etc.

    Tailgate control unit
    control unit RDC
    control unit PDC
    LCPA module
    air supply control module
    Control unit, sliding
    etc etc etc = $6k+/-

135,000 miles. in otherwise very good condition. I was not planning on keeping it. Had it for sale for a week before this problem occurred.

    Thoughts?
Pay it and suck it up? (not really sure what other options I have)
Dismantle the car and sell it for parts?
    Seriously, all ideas welcome...

BMWUSA has recelently reached a settlement on a class action suite on electronics being damaged as a result of water intrusion into the spare tire well. Full model run, 2004-2010 model years, e60, for sure, and I believe e61 also. You may be one lucky man at this point... Search this forum as there is a lengthy thread with the latest information.

Similar experience here. Filed a claim with auto insurance and claim approved to fix the damage, but not fix the leak source. Fair trade in my opinion.

That is a great lead, jtbgonesailing, thank you! Can't seem to find the thread you mention. can you point me in the right direction?

My insurance didn't cover it, clouse123. I have Allstate.

Recommendations for alternatives to the dealer in Westchester County NY / Fairfield County CT??

If the car is < 10 years old - for the free inspection and repair now. Here is a link to an article about it. Othwerwise, if you have the receipt from the prior repair due to the water damage, you can get reimbursed.

If insurance won't cover it and BMW settlement won't cover it, buy used modules from a junkyard and have them coded. That's what the next guy will do. As it sits you have might have a $2k car with $4k part out value versus $8k for a running car value.

I would skip the dealer. You will have to find an independent shop or a geeky forum member with the equipment. It's beyond me but I have had friends code stuff on my 08M3. Not sure where to tell you to start looking but this will take time and effort to find used modules and someone to code.

OP, Did you read the second link I posted, in it's entirety? If anything, I would call BMWUSA, in New Jersey and determine the status of the recall campaign, as it was being modified to enclude full production run, with no 10 year provision, etc.

Thanks. I have spoken with them. Nothing in anyone's system for this yet. No bulletin, no recall. I conclude the class action suit is still pending.

Ok, I really haven't been following as I relocated all the modules to left rear high up years ago. Sorry you're got burned by this one... For dollars involved, Google the Suite and see where it stands and where the latest revisions are.

Apologies on the zombie thread. This happened to me as well about a week. Spoke to the dealer yesterday and they indicated repairs under the class action are good through mid August of this year.

I'm in for the water intrusion lawsuit, I would like more info on this, I washed my car at the carwash and my dme and all components in that area were saturated, just curious if it applies to them as well?

Look at my post #6 above with links to the class action suite. Believe remediation sunsetter last month.
