I'm guessing the small starter pinion is stuck engaged to the drive plate.
but before I start taking the car apart I would like to hear other opinions.

Dis you just install the transmission? The car didn't leave the factory with a red torque converter....
Is the starter bolted up perfectly straight? If so, I'd guess that your flexplate is cracked.

well the car ran fine with this setup for past 3 years... something just happened
That would then indicate the cracked flexplate.

It sounds to me like the starter hasn't disengaged.
If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
solved: starter was not disengaging properly. replaced starter.
