    Oil usage

2001 330ci with 230,000 miles. I'm not sure if the quantity sensor is working right, but it just went on after adding a quart only 500 miles ago.

Ive owned the car since 2003 and have taken good care of it. What would be considered normal oil burn for this car? Are there any products to help increase mileage between adding quarts?

I have atteneded any and all leaks. I see no blue smoke out the exhaust, or leaks on the garage floor. Thx

Has the CCV Valve system ever been replaced?
A quart every 500mi. is excessive.
What grade, brand, of oil are you using?
Don't need any additive products, the correct grade and quality of oil contains all you need.

The PCV valve system has been replaced. Not sure about the CCV valve system.

The yellow low caution light did come in yesterday at about 500 miles. But it has not been back on. The dipstick level is not quite at the low mark yet. So, maybe only one quart per 1,000.

My mechanic suggested trying JB oil treatment. I use Castrol synthetic 5-30.

This is the system I am referring to:
    https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=11_2194
Malfunctioning or failure of the valve(#1) is known to create excessive oil consumption.
Commonly recommended and sold as a kit for replacement.
Do not mask the problem with oil treatment, as you may well exacerbate engine problems.

You can also go with a heavier oil too, say 5W-40 or maybe a 0W-40 to see if that helps slow down the drinking of oil.

Next will be to see if you have oil leaks, as the M-54 is notorious for the following places: Valve cover; Oil filter housing; and oil pan gasket.

If you have a new ccv system and still have excessive oil consumption then try the 02Pilot mod. You can find it by searching this forum.

You have a 16yr old vehicle with 230kmi. If the CCV valve hasn't been replaced,
along with the 4 hoses and old style oil dipstick tube with o-ring,
now would be a good time to replace the system.
If you don't mind a long read, you should read the 02Pilot thread on excessive oil consumption:

Install a catch can. That will eliminate the CCV and oil consumption. There are a few YouTube videos that show how to install a catch can. I installed a catch can a 0 oil consumption. 02 pilot is a great reference.

The line from the ccv to the oil dipstick tube needs to replaced as well as cleaning out the tube in the dipstick. This will clog and stop the system from draining to the oil pan.
Lime Rock Park... the most fun you can have in a mile and a half.
