The dealer says they use Shell 5W-30 LL-04 oil. Is there something that is readily available at the stores I can use instead?
i dont want to start an oil debate thread but i'll probably be using Rotella T6 5w40 for my next oil service. Even the BMW "diesel" specific dealer oil is fairly cheap? Around $8/bottle (update: PM#83212365949 @ BMW of Fairfax is $7.45/bottle)

Last I read was that T6 did not have the LL04 rating for the 35d.
Although its not "approved" by BMW (technically the only oil "approved" is the BMW diesel oil you buy from the dealer) as long as you choose a quality oil which has low SAPS and ash content lower than 1% (for the life of the DPF) you are fine -
The BMW oil if I recall correct is .6% ash, Rotella is .8% - I like Rotella's additives better and I like a 5w-40 on these heavy trucks myself - Either way change it often

i was just looking for the Castrol SLX 5w30 but can't find it anywhere. The dealer in Dallas didn't have it either. What about the Mobil 1 ESP? Is that a no no?
