    Getting recalls done? a Question

Anyone know if its possible to take a u.s. car to canada for a recall?

We used to do the other way around when I worked in Spokane WA.

closest dealer to me now is 450 miles away, but canada is 80ish away.

I wouldnt see why it would be a problem. BMW North America should cover Canada too.

I have U.S. Spec cars in Germany, and the local dealership has been more than happy to take care of the Airbag recall for me.

Well just got off the phone with BMW NA and they said no.... I told them the closest dealership is 450 miles away and that doesnt make a recall of this safety type very easy on us. they said I could go to Winnepeg and pay for the recall parts and labor and bring the bill back to a local dealer and get it reimbursed. but thats not always done. So I said if the air bag goes off and injures my son because the recall is not done due to no dealership in my area who is responsible? I also asked if there was any sort of help they could give me being the dealer is 450 miles away. like mileage or hotel stay? nope.... We used to handle canada cars all the time at the dealership I worked at in washington. no problems but cant go the other way????? WTH BMW!!!!!!

Why not make the call to that dealership you would like to take the car? BMW of North America is in Canada as well, so whom ever you spoke with isn't very knowledgeable about what "NA" means it seems. This is a BMW recall, not just BMW of NA recall, so the dealership will know how to handle the problem and of course will make sure they are paid.

actually what was told to me is that the recall is from NHTSA which is a US recall. Canada might be doing there own recall on canadian vehicles and that taking a U.S. Car to canada does not comply with the recall from NHTSA. Yes I will call Manitoba dealer today and ask but I suspect the same answer. And From working with BMW as a tech, BMW NA does not always cover canada and mexico. they are very seperate entities dealing with warranty and such. I will keep posted as to what dealer says today.

BMW of New London Connecticut....refuses to address 'airbag' replacement for my 2003 325xi.......Unless, I was sent in the US mail from BMW Germany, their official notification.....needs to be 'post' marked and to the original buyer.

I currently have employed an attorney as of last Wednesday.

When I have new news...I will fill all of you in.

Despite the fact that both countries fall under the same "BMW of NA", They are very separated. If a Canadian Dealer needs a part it is either from Canada or Germany, they can not even see stock in the USA...never-mind order from it. I have a few ideas on why they make this hard separation but am not entirely sure.

FWIW: Its the same going the other direction as well. I recently was dealing with a SULEV vehicle up here in Canada, the vehicle is covered under its special extended warranty in the USA, but no Canadian dealers will honor it several refused to even work on it.

I just bought a 2004 330 that started life in Cleveland. I just called my local dealer. It took about 5 minutes for them to look up the recall info and schedule me in for a new drivers airbag. They were very nice about it. Try another dealer.

that is complete B.S. the recall is for the vehicle not who owns it. They must honor the recall on that vehicle regardless is you are the first or 17th owner of that vehicle. The only stipulation is if the car has a salvage title, then I have seen recalls get rejected. Get a different dealer or call the customer relations at BMW, 1-800-525-7417. Or better yet call NHTSA hotline and report them 1-888-327-4236

I am not having any luck with getting mine done in Canada.. Wont do it called dealer got same answer. Grrrrr. guess ill have to suck it up and drive 450 miles for mine.

I think I met the first fence at BMW of New London, Ct. I have yet to address the recall for a second time...maybe what they want before they are forced to become obligated...in their minds.
