    E36 Trans Swap in 318IS

Need some help with some details on my latest project. I have a 91 318IS that I rebuilt the motor on. When we did this, we replaced the clutch with a Fidanza Flywheel and M3 clutch. Once we did that, the original transmission didn't fit over the new clutch. It was cheaper to replace the trans than to try and get the OEM dual mass flywheel resurfaced so we got a e36 318 transmission, which did fit over the clutch.

The engine and trans are bolted together and installed in the car.

I am have my main issue with the transmission mount, the one I have with the car doesn't line up with the trans mounts. What mount bracket will fit with this combo?

Also I have read shift linkage is pretty close to the same and just needs some tweaking to make it work, any tips here?

    Thanks!

Pic of back of trans for reference:

    Do you have a welder?
If your e30 runs bad, switch to Megasquirt first. Then try new spark plugs, cap and rotor, wires, oxygen sensor, crank shaft position sensor, coolant temp sensor, air flow meter, idle control valve, throttle position sensor, digital motor electronics unit, harmonic balancer, fuel injectors, engine harness...

Sure do, but was hoping to find a bolt in solution if one was available.

If there's a bolt in solution, it's still going to faster to either make a new one or modify your current one.

Another faster solution is to take a straight edge, check your original flywheel for flatness, and if it's ok, simply clean it up with a scotchbrite pad, scuff it with sandpaper, and reinstall it. If you have an orbital sander it should only take a few minutes. There are plenty of guides to DIY resurfacing your flywheel online.

    from e30 Wiki

"If you're using a gearbox from an E36, you'll notice that it sits at an angle compared to E30 boxes. This will give you an issue regarding both the gearbox mounts and the gear shifter. These challenges can be fixed by some simple creativity, which involves beefing up one side of the gearbox mount with welded patches, and bending the gear shifter rod to accommodate the angle. More importantly, the bolt pattern between the gearbox bell housing and the engine block is not identical. The 4/5 BIG bolts will go in but the smaller bolts that hold the plate steady are different and cannot be used. This is still safe as the small bolts are not load bearing, and are only used as locators."

So I got back under the car today. I removed the stock rubber transmission mounts from the cross bar and installed the mount under the car. With the trans in place, I measured the gaps between the mount and the trans.

With the mount flipped, the gap is 35mm on one side and 40mm on the other. The diameter of the origional rubber mount is about 45mm (1.75in approx). I ordered some universal polyurethane mounts from energy suspension today that are 1.5" dia and 3/4" tall. I plan to stack these pads to the needed height, and install with the original metal cross piece and a proper graded through bolt.

I'll post pics once I get it in the car.
