Shogun, heater works just fine blowing hot. After draining/refilling the water for about 4 times I have noticed that the water is coming out cleaner and the rusty odor is almost gone. Yes, I was draining the system at the lower part of the radiator, and I started thinking that the rest of the water should be "in the system": I was not expecting that half of it to be in the heater core and hoses. Thank you for clarifying that! While running the engine with the expansion tank cap off, I have noticed that after the water temperature is rising, the water level in the expansion tank is rising as well being evacuated through the overflow hose: is this normal ? I did fill the system above the mark on the expansion tank. Is the volume increasing due to raise in temperature, or something gets "stuck" somewhere. Strangely enough, the level continued to raise for a while, even after I turned off the engine

That is normal, Coefficients of cubical or volumetric thermal expansion of water http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/wa...ies-d_162.html
and that it continues to rise after you switched the engine off is also normal, that is why modern engines have a electric cooling fan which continues to run for a while after engines have been switched off. Even my 1998 660cc Honda Acty Truck has such a system already. Some years ago we discussed here in the forum how to make such system on the E32, cooling down the engine with aux fan after engine is switched off with a delay timer. https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...ing+engine+off

The official coolant, draining and filling accdg to Bentley:
remove coolant expansion tank cap. set temperature controls in passenger compartment to full warm (driver + passenger side).
allow the cooling system to cool before opening or draining the cooling system.
place 3-gallon pail beneath radiator drain plug, remove drain plug.
place 3 gallon pail beneath rear of engine block. Loosen and remove engine block coolant drain plug(s).
On M30 engine the block drain plug is located on the exhaust side of engine, below cyl. # 6.
On M60 block drains below # 2 and 3 cylinder exhaust ports and below # 5+6 cyl.
On M70 below # 4 and 10 cylinders exhaust ports.
reinstall radiator and engine block drain plugs using new washers. Be sure heater control is set to full heat.
Cooling mix. of 50% anti-freeze and 50% distilled water, fill system slowly so that air is allowed to escape. Bleed cooling system

Coolant level in expansion tank should be at level COLD mark on tank when coolant is cold.

After flushing the cooling system several times, the water drains out having a decent clarity. I will drive the car for a week (after I register it) then flush the system again. Today, the fan clutch has finally arrived : I had a firm belief that I can take the fan clutch out without the "special tools", but it looks like I really need the pulley holder such way the whole assembly will not turn when trying to turn the bolt with the 32 mm wrench. Does anybody know where I can get such tool
    Thank you

try like shown on my website with a wrench http://twrite.org/shogunnew/upgrades...t_locking_tool
or make one from a steel plate http://netisak.lpru.ac.th/bmw_e34_di...clutch_en.html

Note: Nut is left hand thread, thus unscrew by hitting wrench top from left to right (car front orientation) http://www.beisansystems.com/procedu..._procedure.htm
In case you want to buy one, all the online shops and ebay have fan clutch removal tool sets

Victory, sweeeet victory!!! I have managed to unscrew the fan clutch, replaced it with a new Behr, and ....what a difference!! I turned the engine on, let it idle, and after some 15 min. or so, the temp gauge started climbing toward the red zone. This time, just before reaching the last "safe" mark in the gauge, I have noticed that there is more noise and air volume coming from the engine fan....2 min later the needle was back to half scale.... I needed this one on my belt!!! I'll have a glass of wine now!!! Thank you for all your help. Now, I am thinking to start installing the new radio.....hmmm, maybe I will start working on the rear subframe bushings.
