    krvapa's E38 restoration project

    Hi,

Posting a crappy pic of my car to start with, isn't really a great way to start a new thread. But this is the only one I've got before I started working on the car. Once all the work is done, I hope to get a decent photo shoot. Co-pilot in the foreground :-)

    Nice color!

Cute kid too. Nice that you are getting him hooked on John Deere early

The first problem I encountered with my car was that the cruise control sometimes stopped working. Apparently the ignition switch (PN: 61 32 6 901 961) can fail and cause all sorts of electrical faults. Replaced it with a new part which fixed my problem.

Back in the day when I didn't know how extensive my overhaul would become, I changed the trunk gas springs. Thought this would be it, except for some basic maintenance...

Because I started getting problems with the 120.000 mile shimmy, I decided to replace all suspension parts to get it going for another 120.000 miles. I started with a rear suspension overhaul. Front suspension -which is where the vibrations come from- is next on my list. I bought a second hand rear carrier to have it sandblasted and powdercoated. The inside has been waxoyled, the bottom has been coated with undercoat to protect the powdercoat from stonechips and prevent rust. I cleaned the differential and painted it too. All other nuts and bolts, traction arms, cv joint boots, wheel bearings, discs and pads, rubber carrier mountings are brand new...

Latest order I had a leaking fuel tank. I was able to repair it with 2K paste, but was afraid that this wouldn't be OK for the MOT, so I decided to replace it with a new one.

Thanks. From now on updates won't come as frequent as this, since the thread is now up to date. I'll try to restore the front end as nice as the rear

Color is now Orient Blue non metallic. When the car is technically sound, I would like to have it repainted. Because the interior is also blue, I kinda have to stick to blue on the outside. Currently I'm thinking Tanzanitblau, but I'm open to suggestions Over here we're more into Deutz and Fendt, but I respect his choice

Thanks! It's a bit easier to do things clean and tight when the entire carrier is out of the car. When this one is finished, I'll post a few pics of my real restoration project 😎

That is the first time I have seen someone replace heat shield with new, have seen some replace with JY pieces from parted cars but never NEW! I had to cut mine to run the exhaust straight out the back and felt bad doing so.

Do you slide the rear carrier on a dolly or a forklift to get that heavy hunk of metal in the right place?

The heat shields were in pretty bad shape. The aluminum was almost completely pulverized at the mounting points. Even with larger washers it would have been difficult fit them. And of course the shiny silver goes great with the shiny black haha

I simply positioned the differential on my Facom trolley jack and lifting plate to move it into place. The entire carrier is a big girl indeed, at least by our standards lol.

Today I started disassembling the front suspension. I thought that I had already bought everything that I needed, but I already saw that I'll have to purchase alot more to get it perfect. Behold my new canvas
