Can I legally buy a 330i in Canada and drive it home to the United States? If so, does Canadian vehicles meet US regulations for safety and emissions?

I remember looking into this a while back, I believe you can as long as the car was legal in the US. Titling process can get a bit weird though. If you do, drop by my place on your way

My boss is canadian and says its quite easy.
You need to fax everything to the us border patrol port of entry that you want to bring the car through 72 hours ahead of time. You need bill of sale, recall clearance(bill of compliance), the car has to be converted to MPH, the VINS have to match, and you need the EPA documents, and the crash test paper work.
Then your state will do a vin inspection when you title it and you may end up paying taxes, but that varies state to state.

Assuming the car is originally a Canadian or US vehicle, and is not salvage or rebuilt then its not an issue. They are built to the same safety and emissions standards. Also, many Canadian cities have no emissions testing requirements, so the current state of emissions devices will vary.
Cars that were previously imported to Canada from elsewhere in the world(Japan is a common one) dont qualify and must be 25 years old before they can be brought to the US. Canada only has a 15 year rule on import from elsewhere in the world.
