    Tweeter volume very low

    Hey, I'd like some advice on why my tweeter volume could be so low.

    I'm going to talk about my front speakers only;

    I have (Previous owner installed) a set of rainbow mid basses, tweeters and corresponding crossovers. They are 4Ohm 90W. The tweeters are barely audible, they are NOT distorted, just very quiet.
    I changed the rainbow tweeters for some cheap Alpine tweeters I had lying around, also 4Ohm 90W (The mid/basses are in the rear), and they sound fine, perfectly audible.

    As the Alipines sound ok, I'm figuring that the crossovers are fine, it's just strange that both Rainbow tweeters are showing the exact same symptoms.
    My amp is a Rainbow Dream 4 90W RMS.

    I've measured the resistance in the Rainbow tweeters and they are both at 4ohms. I also tried reversing the polarity just in case, but this didn't work.
    Are the Rainbow tweeters dead? If so, what could be wrong with them? I managed to open one and the cone had no signs of tearing or damage. It'd be great to be able to use them as they appear to be of great quality, much sturdier than the Alpines, and boasting silk domes etc..

    Any insight would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Hellmet

    Hi,

    Most likely previously driven at a volume where distortion overheated the voice coils but not quite enough to completely blow them. You could find another set of silk dome tweeters and use those.

    Cheers, Dennis!
