Fresh 3D print (FDM ABS) of the lower console that Venom13132 scanned. Prior to cleaning with acetone/MEK and some filling, sanding, and paint.

You did all the hard work! I should be able to find the time soon to finish modeling the double din version I've been working on.

The first picture shows the mixed surface/solid modified entity created from the automatically surfaced body that was obtained from the meshed scan data. This consisted of filling the AC holes, filling the lower gauge holes, and enlarging the stereo and stereo bezel opening to the 2 din size. Next the AC holes were relocated to the former location of the gauge holes (with the correct diameter and spacing). This solid-surface mixed entity was then reconverted into a mesh (purple), and the two meshes in the 3rd picture will be intersected and merged to produce the correct modified 2 din panel, and then cleaned up for 3d printing.

Of course I will still have to make some test fit modifications to accomodate the AC controls, as the support ribs on the back will interfere with flush mounting.
Now we just need someone to make some extended cables for the hvac knobs

Would you be able to make one without the accessory buttons for a non-M? If so about how much would one cost? I love the look the shifter trim ring gives the interior.

the non-M trim is completely different. I would need to have one to scan in to make a point cloud of it.

what scanner did you use to scan it? I've been looking at the Artec eva and spider.

I'm not familiar with 3D printing--is that as good of a finish as it can produce due to the nature of the process, or is that something that can be improved with tweaking?

Ahhhh very good progress. Looking forward to seeing this panel after it's cleaned up and painted. Have you given thought to a selling price and can they be massed produced or by special order only?

Depends on the printer but that ones not too bad. They work by melting plastic and extruding it so there often times becomes a tradeoff between dots per inch and time it makes to produce the unit (and cost)
They then have to be finished by hand

Wow - looks amazing - if we can manage to color-match the existing interiors that would be incredible.

I used an Atos III triple blue light scanner from GOM. Its around a $300,000 system we have at work.

Would almost kill (literally) for a scanner that nice. Do you contract?

I work for Rolls-Royce Corp (not the cars, that is BMW) so cant really contract out. I can moonlight a little on my own time. I do know an individual that has his own scanner and runs a private business with it. No idea what his rates are.

    ?
I know almost nothing about 3d printing or CNC machining, so this is probably a dumb question, but... Would it be possible to take the files produced from scanning and use a CNC mill? Rather than printing?

Depends on the file. CNCing is usually cost prohibitive though for stuff like this.

Would an SLA printer work for these? Way higher resolution but the plastic is not as strong

Depends on resin. 3d Systems will quote any project that you have with many resin options.

if someone really wanted to make it more cost efficient, you can always get some soft tooling. That requires investment though.

What about printing (or milling) a high-res master, then finding a shop that can take that and do a run of conventional injection molded units?

This can be done, as I can just make the mold negatives digitally from the stl file, and have someone modify the negatives into injection mold tooling, but this will realistically need to be a crowd funding effort as it will probably cost $5000-$10000 at least to get a production run going for this part. The upside is that we would have cheap consoles and would be able to see if this is a great method of reproducing NLA and/or expensive plastic bits for long-term ownership purposes.
