Guys, I know the video is bad but I got the cupholder done and then thought I should share. It's a quicky bubba cupholder and same category video. I've been suffering this shortcoming in an e24 for over 20yrs and the other day I said screw it I'm gonna make something I can use today. I do have a really cool swing out billet aluminum cupholder that I intend on mounting in the side of the console at a later date.

Looks practical unless u gotta use the handbrake. I use a simple cup holder. Same size pvc with a cap on the base. Sprayed VHT black.
* E24 I have a bank of 3 fits nice between the console and seat.
* 2002 have one each side wedged between the handbrake and seat.
* E23 have 2 on the drivers side door card with a slot so they slide in.
* E34 have a bank of 3 custom slotted to fit te centre console painted lotus white
none are permanent or fixed in any way and I have never lost a drink by tipping over

That is some seriously cool redneck engineering. I am going to have to go thru my plumbing cabinet and see what is in there
That would work in my 996TT. I guess they figure that you should be out terrorizing the highways with a Porsche, not cruising and enjoying a cold beverage.
Jake, this is where I got the swing away cupholder

Thanks much. I'm going to see if there is a space I can insert this. There was another cup holder on this forum that used some 4" pvc and bent plastic to place two cup holders under the brake handle. It seemed pretty workable. I gotta find that one, too. This car really needs a good cup holder.
I had two of these in my Z4. On a whim, I took one out and put it in the 635. It works like a champ.

The site doesn't list the E24 as one of cars that it fits, but it was an actual 10 second installation in my car.
There's this also:

Gaz I have one of these in the 2002:

Jake, I thought about another one on the other side, seemed logical. But then when it's in place, it kinda looks like something you'd put a condom on! Similar ones are used in c3 vettes all the time but I can't get past the appearance. And I'm usually riding solo in the 6 anyway.
Did you have to screw it at the top somehow? I may have to try that one, I had a plastic version of it that didn't work well without screwing it in. Also had the double door pocket version but again just didn't work out for me. I have to pull the console at some point to address the AC, at that point I have a punch list of things to tidy up and I'll put the swing away cup holder in then too. I never get tired of cupholder suggestions though, so many early cars of all makes just didn't have them.
Slofut,
There are no screws involved in the ultimate cupholder. The extended part of the holder just slips between the carpet and the underside of the console. Very slick.

In the spirit of creating cupholders, I got up this morning and made the attached cupholder for the rear seat. I still have to figure out how to keep the lid open during braking. I don't want to change the stock look of the cooler from the outside ie. no holes drilled, etc. Any suggestions would be welcome.

First thing that comes to mind is a pie shaped wedge (some type of blocking) on each side of the hinge between the lid and cooler, hold it in place with a small amount of cheap two side sticky tape applied to the bottom of wedge to prevent damage to the leather Paint them black.

I meditated on a bunch of possibilities but this is the best one I could come up with. I don't particularly like the color but it's ok.

I like that one - did you fabricate it yourself?

Yup. Not hard. 3" plastic plumbing pipe cut down to three inches tall. Lexan plastic, cut 8" x 5.9" heated and bent to fit the console. Mount the pipe with a one inch gap for the brake handle. The pipe overhangs the edge of the lexan a bit so I cut a semicircle to fit under the bottom. This will keep drips from running onto the carpet. I still need to fill the interior gaps with caulk. The console is not straight front to back so the back end is narrower than the front. I filled in the bottom of the outside of the pipe base (between the brake handle opening), where it mounts to the lexan, with caulk to close the seam. Spray painted. Done. The water bottle rattles around a bit but my BMW coffee mug fits snuggly. I did sand everything with 600 wet/dry sandpaper before and between coats. I worked on it over several days but the total time for construction and the painting process (with drying time) was about 3 hours.

Thanks for the details. New project for me, as if I needed another one.

Cool cupholder ideas everybody!
I'll get some pics up of them installed in various cars I have. I've just been away from home for some time
