    Gas Cap Check Engine Light

Recently a light popped up on the dash that said gas gap loose. I tightened it and shortly after a service engine soon light came up. After a week af looking at that I went to Auto Zone and the guy read the code and said it is just a gas cap notification and it should go off after 200 miles. It doesn't seem to be going off so I'm wondering if I need a new gas cap. Do the seals go bad after a while? I have a 2003 Z4 Roasdster with 32000 miles on it. When I bought the car 2.5 months ago that gas cap was on so freekin tight I needed a pump pliers to remove it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Not to alarm you, but my gas cap light was the first sign that my instrument cluster was failing. This happened while under warranty so the car was still relatively new.

Hopefully you just have a faulty sensor.
Not so much a signature as a cry for help.

Hold on, saw this in a cartoon once...think I can pull it off.

The cap shouldn't require more than a firm pushdown and twist motion.
Purchase a new Genuine BMW replacement cap,It is 17yrs old after all, and the rubber seal may have deteriorated.

I know this is old but have similar problem. Wife had fuel cap warning come up a couple of time. Reset the cap 2x but now have service engine soon light. Advance Auto code checked said it was an evap code. Didn't give a number. As usual Murphy hit and I cracked the screen on my Foxwell NT520. Will a bad cap cause a constant Service Engine Soon light to stay on?

Yes, due to a bad cap causing a leak in the fuel evap system, triggering an OBD2 emissions fault, causing a SES light to illuminate.

Thanks. Wife just said the cap light came on once before 2 weeks ago. 83k so a new cap is a fair bet.

I had to but a new one to get the light to go out. Dealership had one in stock. My light went out after a day or so of driving.

I think the wife just didn't seat it correctly. Light went out and hasn't been back.
