    Getrag Manual 6sp for M70?

Hey everyone, im usually in the E32,E38 forums but browsing craigslist I may have found a jem of a tranny for $75.
Little research brings up that this is a Getrag 560s made for the M70 V12 engine from the 850....... Only markings on the case was 286.0.0308.90 and 1221904.9. Seller has it up for $75 but it was posted 2 months ago. I am pulling my hair out as I am sure this is off the 850. He last updated a month ago and did not post his dam number so I have emailed him through the CL.

Is this correct that this is the Getrag made for the M70? I only found german sites with that number alongside M70 etc.

    Thank you,
    Sergio S.

The S6S 560G TALR is the correct 6 speed for the 12 cylinder 850. The issue is ...... there are NO PARTS available for them (anywhere). So, if it works fine that is a steal ..... if it doesn't you are SOL.

    Thanks man,

I cannot believe I have not seen that until now. I browse CL nearly everyday. According to him its in "good condition" but by the looks and price, he probably had this laying around from a previous tennant or something.

Whatever happened to the supposed 420G conversion?

The parts are still roaming around on ebay.

Not the same trans, the 560 is unicornium. But as seen above, they're selling adapter plates for that very transmission. Nobody has tried them out, yet....

So what's the point of purchasing a used transmission if you can't get parts for the thing? As an owner of a 6-speed E31 I would be real hesitant to buy a used one from a wrecker because I don't know how long it will last. And once it does explode, I am now left with two tranny's that don't work and can't be fixed.

I think there is real promise in the 420G conversion kit that was discussed. Also, I recently watched an episode of Jay Leno's garage where he said he now has to manufacture most of the parts he needs for his really old cars. CNC technology has really come around which allows him to make these "one-off" parts for a "reasonable" price. Now Jay Leno's view of reasonable and mine are most certainly different, but I am hopeful if I ever need to replace a part in my 560G, I'll be able to go to a machine shop and say, "Can you make me one of these?" In the meantime, I'm very respectful of my transmission when I drive my car . . . use it but don't abuse it.

This is a frustrating thing with BMW compared to a company like Mercedes. MB has a superb spare parts department that manufactures parts for every model they ever made (at least that's what I heard). You need a thing-a-ma-jig for your 1936 540K? Well here you go.

Although CNC machining is becoming more affordable, it is words like these that cause the problem:

    Sintered
    Reamed
    Hardened and Tempered
    Splined
    Special Alloy

I started pulling my parts list together for a 420G conversion, but just came across this thread. I am interested if you still have this one left. Sending you a PM as well.

    Thanks,
    Zach

The guy that built the "Gristle Hammer" M70 E34 wagon used one of those adapter plates from PMC Motorsport out of Poland. He said everything worked fine, but he had to have a 25mm spacer machined to space the flywheel and clutch and they he had to slightly modify the bell housing to work properly with the started. He also said that the Land Rover started from the older ones that had the M60 engine might work without that modification.

Hello! Would you (or anyone reading this) happen to have a link to that bit about that 25mm spacer? I purchased one of the PMC adapter rings for my e32, and have a 420G from an e34 540i (which I'm led to believe shouldn't have the starter problem mentioned). I have a CNC in the garage, so milling a 1in spacer isn't the end of the world, but getting exact dims from someone who's made it work already would sure be nice. Thanks!

I never saw this reply until today. Did you ever figure out how to make or where to purchase the flywheel spacer?
