520d E39 lacking power after diesel engine runaway and turbo swap

    Hello!

My friend and I blew the turbo on his E39 520d. This caused lots of oil to accumulate in the hoses running to the intake. However, it took a couple of weeks before the new turbo arrived so this was kind of forgotten so we did nothing to drain this oil. We DID, however, fill it up with motor oil, so the engine was not running dry. Predictably, when we fired it up after the turbo swap, this oil got sucked in along with the compressed air running from the turbo and caused it to run at about 4-5krpm for about 30-60 seconds. Thankfully, though, we had forgotten to tighten the hose running from the turbo to the intake, so this popped off due to the pressure of the turbo and the engine then stalled. We took it back inside, fixed the hose and started the engine once again(we had to tow it and put it in second gear and dump the clutch, but this might have been because the battery was getting weak, but itīs worth mentioning.) This time the engine ran fine, but it was smoking excessively. However, Iīm guessing this was due to the oil still being in the system. After running the car for about 15-20 minutes the smoking stopped and the car ran like it was supposed to. However, it lacks power. Itīs not as powerful as it was before the first turbo went out. I checked the air filter thatīs located right above the turbo but I donīt feel like itīs excessively dirty. Where do I start looking and what might the problem be? I feel like it struggled to gain RPMs up high, however Iīm not sure quite how to describe it. Someone told me to check the diesel particle filter? Iīd appreciate it if someone could lead us in the right direction.
    Thanks in advance!

It could be a few things.

In the VW TDI world, a runaway usually bends connecting rods.

But the problem may be as simple as an improperly adjusted turbo actuator, or another boost leak.
