How much?
I was looking into this last week. Would be nice to have a spare engine, for when my timing chain guides go... Is it in an x5?
About a grand more for the swap. It's a 4.6. That's luke saying, "Is it better to spend $20 on my common engine or $40 on something that nobody else has?"
If the cost is a question, a swap isn't your thing right now.
Spend the $3-4k to refresh what you already have.
"closer to fail" there's no indication that this is even a serious consideration.

Dammit....why wasn't this available when I was looking for an engine to replace my timing guide grenades one?! I'm almost ready to shoehorn the replacement back in too...

He re-listed it. Wagons Ho and I were trying to put something together but I think the seller goes off his meds on whims.

He was willing to take $2k last weekend
Went to possibly buy, but wanted to check out damage and confirm that it really is a 4.6. On a Saturday of course because I work for a living, and it's a 3hr drive from Seattle in a bmw. More with truck and trailer. Get there to find out that there's a $95 charge to get in the tow yard and look, and the damage keeps getting worse in the details from owner. At least now there are pictures that represent. Nothing will prepare you for the owners high expectations of what is left. I might still be in the game if time prepares everyone for reality.
Notice that it doesn't have the standard 4.6 sport bumpers and the vin is hard to read on the receipts, hence the due diligence.
Good on you for not buying it. A lot of people will drive 3 hours and then say, "well it's not what I expected, but I drove 3 hours to get here" and buy it anyway. Hopefully you can get it at the price you want.
If your e30 runs bad, switch to Megasquirt first. Then try new spark plugs, cap and rotor, wires, oxygen sensor, crank shaft position sensor, coolant temp sensor, air flow meter, idle control valve, throttle position sensor, digital motor electronics unit, harmonic balancer, fuel injectors, engine harness...
