    Dash Temperature?

So I not so recently picked up a 525I in August and i noticed that the dash info box temp reads -40F. I was wondering why that may be and if there was a rest i need to do or if its a faulty sensor somewhere? Sorry I'm new to BMWs...

There is a temp sensor in the front portion of the passenger fender - in front of the wheel, but behind the bumper - pointy thing that is attached to the fender liner looking up from underneath the car.

Did you mean the outside ambient temp sensor? If so, then check the wiring/plug connector in front of the right front wheel. Maybe the sensor is missing or is damaged, or frayed wiring harness.

If you want your HVAC system to work correctly this spring/summer/fall...you'll want to get the ambient temp sensor issue taken care of. If you have the digital IHKA control module (your AC panel) uses data from the ambient temp sensor to perform some of its functions. The ambient temp sensor's data is also used by other systems...like your heated mirrors. If the ambient temp sensor is reading -40° F...then it will operate as such...thus your side mirror's heating elements are always on...which could cause them to burn out.

    For example:

All all that is there are 2 exposed wires... guessing a positive and negative ... is there supposed to be a housing or just two wires that connect. Sorry for not knowing again i feel like its simple but I'm so lost.... (but yea its missing)

Any idea how to fix this.

You can also try the BMW electrical harness (#3 in the diagram and part nbr index below). I'm sure your local BMW dealership can order the harness (have the correct 11 digit BMW part nbr when you go in...it'll make things easier/quicker to look up). The ambient temp sensor is #1 in the diagram & part nbr index:

Click to see the "bushing" (for #3) if that's what you need, too: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/photos/61130005199

I had the same problem last year and ordered a repair kit from BavAuto. Looks like they are back ordered now but this is what you need.

You also need the housing, item 14:

    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...27#51718159426

Very common issue, caused by driving over curbs or parking lot concrete stops.

The wires are not polarity-sensitive; the sensor is a resistance type.
