Just sold my 528i. It feels weird not having it anymore as I've had it for 4 years. Definitely will miss the stick shift...

It has been forever since I've provided any updates!

After doing the TCGs and replacing all of the gaskets I kept getting a random P0174 (bank 2 too lean). After searching around, this code is most likely due to vacuum leaks HOWEVER, I just replaced all of the gaskets, grommets, hoses, etc. After further online self-education, fuel trims were the tell tale sign of what's going on.

Here is a picture from Aug-2017 showing long term fuel trims (LTFTs): bank 1 = 13.3%; bank 2 = 18.0%. Given that both banks are high %, MAF was a suspect.
    IMG_1080.jpg

Upon closer inspection, a possible defect was noted. It's hard to see in the picture but there is a slight discoloration of the metal strip. Cleaning the unit didn't improve the LTFTs.
    IMG_1082.jpg

So I replaced the MAF with a VW unit. LTFTs immediately improved and no more P0174 code!

    Sep-2017 LTFTs after MAF replacement: bank 1 = -5.5%; bank 2 = 0.0%.
    IMG_1089.jpg

    Nov-2017 LTFTs after MAF replacement: bank 1 = -5.5%; bank 2 = 0.5%.
    IMG_1150.jpg

I suspect my bank 1 O2 sensor may not be working at optimal level since there is a 5% difference between bank 1 and 2 (compare pre and post MAF replacement values). I've put over 2K miles on the VW MAF and it works great!

So, to make the long story short = check your LTFTs!

Sun bleached rear speaker shelf... misaligned 3rd brake rubber gasket... sagging headliner. The last straw was the rear speakers blowing up and making fart noises instead of music! Enough is enough, time to get to work:

    1) First item on agenda: rear speaker shelf.

    2) Second item on agenda: misaligned 3rd brake rubber gasket (I assume it got messed up when PO had the windows tinted).

    3) Third item on agenda: rear speakers.

Rear speakers were replaced with VW Monsoon speakers, using dville's method. Thank you dville for finding, sharing and documenting this awesome DIY fix! (this is a 2nd VW part in my BMW)

Now I can actually enjoy the music, when a radio station has a decent signal -- is it just me or the radio reception/antenna in e38 really crappy?

I had nearly the same problems as you - replaced my speakers with Monsoons, my brake light gasket looked EXACTLY the same, and so does my rear shelf. The shelf is the one thing I haven't fixed yet, although I have the material for it. Yours looks great!

My radio reception is actually pretty decent. My wife's brand-new Corolla jumps in and out of stereo reception in the same areas where mine is rock strong.

Looks great Ruskii! I have the purple rear deck too, and my sub is still disconnected after having my rear shocks replaced last year. One of these days I will take care of that...

Thanks! I opted to simply spray it black with cloth/vinyl paint instead of recovering it. The cloth itself was in decent shape, just faded.

Thanks! Yeah, it's a PITA to remove the sub box, especially if you have the rear child seat latches = if you remove it, go for the rear shelf! It's only held in place with 3(?) bolts/nuts... piece of cake compared to the sub box.

    4) Final item on agenda: completely recover a/b/c pillars, headliner, sunroof shade, etc.

    Before: saggy and dirty

It all started with a small "bubble" in the left rear corner, right above passenger's head. I believe the cloth started to separated after I fixed the window regulator and started to drive with the window down (see post above about the car giving me wood ).

Removing old glue-soaked foam backing was horrible! It would not simply brush off, no, it would ball up into gooey chunks and smear if worked too hard... but all of the panels were eventually cleaned up.

    IMG_1237.jpg

Also, I spray painted some of the trim pieces (including visors) black color to better blend in with the new cloth.

    Final product

Sorry for delay but here is the final product! Still need to paint the grab handles (been way too cold for that). Also, it is extremely hard to take pictures of black stuff, so please excuse the quality of pictures as I had to turn up the brightness. Overall I am happy with the results and hope it will last, as there is no way in hell I am re-doing it...

Looks nice! What did you use to piant the plastics and what type of finish satin or flat black?

Thanks man. I got everything from Advance Auto. It was primer+paint type of spray can for plastics. I went with satin finish to match some of the other OE black trim pieces.

Replaced the old sunroof gasket with a new one to get rid of the 1mm gap which caused extra wind noise and water leaks. Good stuff. Separate thread here: https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...8#post29998728

And when I was done with the sunroof gasket, I decided to fix the overdue broken speaker grill on the front passenger side:

    Before:

    After:
    IMG_1381.jpg

Gotta love before and after shots, very satisfactory... and you always try to forget in-between moments of hell that you went through fixing one piece and breaking something else in the process. So here is my little rant:

While removing the door card, the plastic door handle snapped in half on the backside. In the process, the cable did something weird to the door latch which caused the mechanism to lock itself. This is when panic set in since no matter what I tried, it would not unlock! So here I am, on Sunday afternoon, trying to fix a stupid speaker grill with a door that can no longer be closed... FUDGE!

Long story short, I got access to the door lock mechanism and fiddled with the cable and it magically reset itself and started to lock/unlock again. I assume that the cable snapped back, when the door handle broke, and caused something inside the door lock/actuator to misalign. Plus, I was able to fix the broken door handle with some super glue, thin gauge sheet metal and a pair of screws/nuts (a little long, but that's what I had on hand). So far no issues! *end of rant*

This old plastic is really brittle, isn't it? Creative solution right there!

Speaking of crappy plastic, C-pillar trim piece fell off. All of those plastic anchors shattered and cloth started peeled off a little too. Need to glue it back on and figure out a way to create new anchors to secure the trim piece in place. Thinking of cutting strips of ductwork sheet metal and some epoxy. Any other suggestions?

Got the C-pillar trim fixed! Some epoxy and strips of ductwork sheet metal did the trick. I was very surprised how easy to work with and strong epoxy is. Also, a little extra fabric glue fixed the cloth that was coming off in one corner.

Damn it to hell! This stupid heat is messing up my headliner

The same spot which started this saga (over the rear passenger seats, where the headliner curves up) is starting to sag a little bit. If I run my hand over the spot, the fabric sticks back to the board... but it sags down when it get hot again.

I am so upset about this because I can't think of an non-invasive solution to fix this. I do not want to take the headliner down, since it was a huge PITA the last time. Glue in a syringe?!

    Fixed the sag!

So here is the offending sag:
    IMG_1461.JPG

Let's give it some "botox" injections to lift it up, hollywood style!
    IMG_1460.jpg

    IMG_1462.JPG

Done! It has been four days now and it's holding up well.
    IMG_1465.jpg

Note that in this picture, the way c-pillar light shone on the headliner, you can see several ripples/sags - in normal light, you can't see them. However, I am going to keep monitoring that spot and inject more glue if necessary (might do few more spots, just to be safe). But I am very happy with the results and the fact that I didn't have to take the headliner out to spray more glue.

Most important is that I avoided this from returning!

I ended up redoing my headliner due to houston heat. Its the glue that I used the first time. It would sag, I would pat it straight and after a day or two it would sag again.
