So my 86 325e is just recently starting to smoke up, I open the engin hood and notice it's coming from the coolant reservoir. I've read that it's normal for it to be empty because it's an overflow reservoir for the coolant but when I try to poor water or coolant into it, it's seams to leak from the undercarriage (instantly draining the coolant reservoir). I looked around the coolant tubes that connect the reservoir to the motor and didn't feal anything wet. So I imagine it has to be further underneath the motor. I did lift my BMW with a jack and saw it was dripping around the timing belt. If anyone can give me some advice, I asked around at the car meats and a lot of ppl told me to just add coolant/water straight to the raidiator cap.
The res is not meant to be empty it should be about have full. The leak coming from under the timing would be the water pump
Replace the water pump, thermostat, timing belt kit, and then have the system pressure tested. Whoever told you that the reservoir is supposed to be empty is a moron.
