My family has a 99 E-36 Convertible, a E-60, and a E-90, what is the best economical scan tool? The E-36 has fully automated top problems? Thanks for your input.
Hello and welcome to the forum! You would actually have to get 2 scanners or 1 that has both options, as the E36 is an OBD1 and the others are OBD2. I've linked below the options that you have. If you have any questions about them, please feel free to give us a call at 888-280-7799 and one of our BMW parts specialists would be happy to help you out!

It's not, it's OBD2

- E36 328is ~210-220whp: Lots of Mods.
- 2000 Z3: Many Mods.
- 2003 VW Jetta TDI Manual 47-50mpg
- 1999 S52 Estoril M Coupe
- 2014 328d Wagon, self-tuned, 270hp/430ft-lbs
- 2019 M2 Competition, self-tuned, 504whp

Ugh! My apologies, I still have the E30 tech articles open and must have automatically entered that. Total blunder here..

no worries. your posts always have good knowledge and i was wondering if i was missing something
A savvy computer user would most probably appreciate INPA, a BMW software tool installed on a laptop.
Read through this thread for info:http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...ion&p=29460001
A person who prefers a convenient, user friendly application, readily available on their personal smartphone would prefer the Carly for BMW APP.

Either one of these choices can communicate with all the vehicles computers, unlike standard P-code scan tools
The e36 still uses the 20 pin does it not?
And the rest are full obd2.
So yeah, you would need two different scanners, or at least two types of cables.
If I were to give my Touring a first name, I'd probably name it "Alan".
Mostly because I like puns.

99 E36 is OBD2 but uses the 20 pin, I have an OPBD2 to 20 pin adapter.
