    Strange idle fluctuation issue

88 735i manual. Whenever I first crank the car with whether cold or hot idle settles in perfect @850rpm. the moment I drive the car that idle goes high at 1600-1800rpm fluctuating up and down. The idle is still smooth but just high. it isn't running rough. ICV was recently replaced (3mos ago). I'm stumped at what it could be. MAF? Thanks guys.

Bought from rob mays in dallas. He said that's a highly documented car here in the forms. Car had to go to the shop and mediately off the shipping truck and is at the shop and has no vacuum leaks by smoke test, TPS is okay, ICV is okay but there is a different DME that's been put into the car it's not the 179 DME for an 88 735i so they're thinking that it might be that but they can't pinpoint it. Cars at Eurofed Automotive which is one of the best in Atlanta and these guys are having a VERY hard time figuring it out. Also have violent shaking from front end at 55-70mph. Car is beauyiful but far from a well sorted e32. Any help would be appreciated.

Shop is saying the ecu is not a 179, which it should be. They say its probably from an automatic tranny which is under load at idle. Since this is a manual tranny the car is idling high because theres no load on the car. Everything else has been ruled out. Hopefully this it. Found a 179 ECU locally with a Turner Motorspot chip installed for $80. Will know today if thats it. Does that make sense to anybody here?

so which DME is it? 150? Fine, based on the list below it should be 150 for a 1988. But I know for sure that for example the M1.3 -179 can replace the M1.1 -150.

Test and see if it gets better. My chips for the 150 and the 17x work on manual and automatic.

Idle issue fixed!!!! It was the ECU from the automatic tranny car that was the problem. The 179 ECU for a manual tranny with the Turner Motorsport chip makes the car run great now. Shop said the whole front suspension is new meyle parts. Has to be the wheels. I just got the car so i dont know if the wheels r hubcentric or not. Goin to ck that next.

Am I missing something here. I just noticed these safety clips on the image here. About five years ago I replaced both cables from my throttle body. The one going to the cruise control broke so I replaced it as well as the one to the gas pedal. I don't remember seeing safety clips on the original cables, nor do I have them now. Should I look into this. Your pic, and mine as it has always been. Thanks
    Jeff

    Not original on the E32, p/n 35401165393, actually used for BMW Z3 1996-2002 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/partxref?q=35401165393
you can get them for example here https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...p/35401165393/
Very expensive now, make your own with needle nose pliers and suitable wire http://www.nmia.com/~dgnrg/tc1.jpg

What exactly do they do? Is it a safety feature?

Just a safety feature, as Gale mentions: prevents throttle cables from detaching, which can cause dangerous unintended acceleration.
