    1987 bmw 528e

    reliability question

    ive been hunting an e30 for a while now and ive come across a 91 318i 4 door 5 speed with the 4cylinder how reliable are the 4 cylinder engines from bmw? ive been driving an 87 528e with the 6 for years now and have 330,000 on it will i see this kind of mileage from the 4 cylinder?

    200-250k and then the timing chain needs to be done. It's a bigger endeavor than replacing the timing belt but it's not the end of the world. I'm not super familiar with the m42, but I don't know of them eating bearings or randomly shooting pistons out of the block or anything.
    If your e30 runs bad, switch to Megasquirt first. Then try new spark plugs, cap and rotor, wires, oxygen sensor, crank shaft position sensor, coolant temp sensor, air flow meter, idle control valve, throttle position sensor, digital motor electronics unit, harmonic balancer, fuel injectors, engine harness...

    You're right, that is definitely the most correct answer.

    Make sure you drive the car long enough and you are ok with the lower power. It's always nice to have the extra punch of the M20.

    the 4 cylinder one i was originally talking about never happened i have found this one now. https://newhaven.craigslist.org/cto/6055822722.html does this seem like s good deal? im going to look at it around 12 is there any spots in particular i should be inspecting extra carefully?

    forget that car. its in worst shape than the ad shows it to be in. heater cores unhooked obc missing check control lit up like an xmas tree crappy idle he says is o2 sensor no exhaust it has a 10 foot flex pipe with a fart can on the end of it trim around sunroof motor is broken holes in the floors too much work in my eyes
