Greetings,
I have read about and worked on fixing a vacuum leak on my e46 for the past 4 months. I replaced the oil sending units seal and ever since had a vacuum leak that would greatly affect performance and idle about 50% of the time I drove her. Replaced all the common things and even did the coils and plugs. Finally discovered the fuel filter vacuum line was cut and fixed that and I think I got it. Question is I was getting lean codes and misfires on all cylinders. Drove like this for months. What can I do to check and or correct any wear damage I may have done? Also how do you reset the idle settings or will these reset after enough driving?
If you are still having the O2 codes, then there is still a vacuum leak. A rough idle normally points to a vacuum leak. To do a "quick" test, unplug the MAF, and start the car. If it idles better, but not perfect, then you have vacuum leaks.
How about the CCV? There is several plastic tubes that can be bad.
Otherwise the best advice I can give you is to go and get the intake smoke tested.
