E46 320i or E90 320d

I'm looking to buy my first BMW, I'm studying Mechanical Engineering and am 20 years old. I've recently looked at either getting an E46 320i or E90 320d. I can't decide for the life of me. I'd love the straight 6 engine of the 320i and absolutely love the look of the E46 but I'm not sure I could afford to run it. I currently have a 2006 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI and the fuel economy is unbelievable (58 mpg). On the other hand I could get the 320d. I can't decide!!! Help!!

If your main concern is fuel economy and want a good, reliable DD, get the E90 - it has much more recent technology and the diesel engine is also exceptionally fuel efficient.
