    Glove box strut/shocks??

OK ECS shows one and they are over 170.00 Each..Is that possible!?

Any hints on where to get these guys? If I need one, I need two, right?

Are they interchangeable with any other car like an E38?

    thanks!

realoem still shows the old cheaper price, but they went up in price drastically http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=51_1035
As far as I know, nothing else fits. On the German 7 forum somebody had ordered the 51161948137 from a shop made in 2014 and sold it for less than $50, but no longer available.
The dampened gas spring pushes/swings the glovebox towards direction the seat when opened.

I had collected some data on that

I assume if you contact a company specialized on gas springs, they can supply something. just a quick google search found this company http://www.indgassprings.com/
    USA - Chicago

    Industrial Gas Springs, Inc.
    162 S. Pinnacle Dr.
    Romeoville, IL 60446
    Phone: 800.214.7034

Maybe they need a sample or the info what I posted above is enough for them.
SUSPA USA? Maybe that is the one which originally make them? http://www.suspa.com/us/products/gas-springs/

Great info, thanks Shogun! (you must get tired of hearing that lol)

I'm going to have to triple check both of these and make sure a junk car can't supply one or two. Man, you'd think as valuable as these things are, they'd at least last a while!

Also check the boat outfitters, when my wife had her small Nissan I bought boat gas shocks with stainless brackets for the tailgate door, modified them a bit to fit, that was about 1/3 of the Nissan shocks, these pleasure boat outfitters have all the sizes, even stainless steel shocks etc

#5 Gas shock BMW 51161948137 is 400N and that is the Sodeman BE-6-40-400-T https://www.sodemann-federn.de/be-6-40-400-t, they also have a US website and that says Force (lbs) 89.92 https://www.sodemann-springs.us/be-6-40-400-t
maybe you find the other one with 25N = Absorber 51161954684 25N in the aftermarket in the US cheaper ones as BMW price is crazy with MSRP: $225.44, check what is available, maybe even Sodeman have it https://www.sodemann-springs.us/ ,measure yours to make sure to find the correct length, also check what is written on your shocks. Johan has a good write up:
    Glove Box Shock Absorber Replacement
Problem: When I opened my glove box it just fell open and dangled forward. Time to replace those gas shocks !
There are two in the dash. One is an absorber to make the dash open gently downwards. The other one is a gas shock holding the compartment in the back or all the way forward in the direction of the driver.
Fixing it: If you're just replacing the absorber you can do this with the compartment in your car. For the shock you have to remove the entire box.
The absorber just clips off and the new one just clips on.
When you're replacing the shock you have to take out the compartment.
    To remove the glove box:
Remove the black plastic cover on the hinge (right rear side).
Remove the torch charger socket and loosen the wires.
The front part is held by the absorber and a strap. Unclip these.
To loosen the rear part you have to open the plastic clips in the rear
Then you're already to replace the box !
Removing the gas shock is quite easy since it probably lost most of the pressure. You can just pry it off with a screwdriver. To replace the shock I first fitted the top, then using a screwdriver I levered the bottom into place using the nut on the support bar.
Parts: These prices are for Europe when the article was written many years ago. Prices are in Euro excl. VAT or any other taxes.
BMW part nr description prices once upon the time
    51161954684 Absorber 12.70
    51161948137 Gas shock 16.90

When someone finds something fitting in the aftermarket, please post the details and links, many have the same problem.

Found in my parts box a new old stock damper/absorber 51161954684 25N and measured it for those which look for an aftermarket damper
    length of the cartridge 9.30cm
    diameter of the cartridge 1.52cm
length of cartridge with brackets 13.25cm
length of damper expanded , end to end of bracket, 19.5cm
    brackets hole innner diameter 0.6cm = 6mm

Written on the cartridge: BMW logo, SUSSRON, SUSPA COMPART AG, zip code 90518 Altdorf, Germany, 5116 1954684 10/08 01 00288E

    Fits: E32, E34, E52 Z8 , pics https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...h/51161954684/ https://www.drive2.ru/l/577164990574757690/
with these details you should be able to find a replacement
