My 1987 e30 Convertible radio was working until last year. After the battery went dead over the winter, I tried to enter the code as usual but nothing changed when I tried to enter the numbers from the buttons, it only displayed "Code". So, I purchased a working radio, with the code from eBay recently. When I try to enter the code on the replacement radio, same thing. I try to program the code but the code doesn't change. Some of the buttons don't respond when I push them. I get an audible response from only one of the number buttons. Any suggestions?
Hi,
Contact the seller of the radio and get a refund perhaps. Then, I'd suggest getting a quality aftermarket head unit that doesn't need a code to have it work!
Which actual 'replacement radio' do you actually have?
Cheers, Dennis!
I bought the same radio as was in the car when I bought it. It is the original one. The seller from eBay said it was working and sent a picture of it with the radio locked on a channel. The radio is the KE-81-ZBM-02. I investigated replacing the radio and upgrading the sound system. Estimated cost ( I already have a new Alpine radio) was $900. I was told the Convertible had the premium sound system and they would have to replace or rewire all the speakers. The replacement radio has the same issue as the old one. I don't think the radio is the issue. What else would prevent the radios from accepting codes as I try to enter them?
Hi,
Seems that the unit is 25-30 years old, so finding a working one will be rare and trying to make an older one work will be an issue as there's probably less than a few electronics car audio specialists who might be able to fix/work out the code/bypass the code function.
It won't cost $900 to put in new modern speakers and a modest level quality single DIN head unit if you shop around and/or look to DIY. My suggestion would be this route so that you get modern functionality and a significant step up in audio performance too.
The choice of course is yours !
Cheers, Dennis!
