Simple question.. what is that thing on the engine that revs it

Hello,

I have a very noob question for you guys, what is that latch mechanism thing that revs the engine in neutral. It is located on top the engine area itself, you pull it and it revs the engine... My car is an e30 and this is not something i have seen before please advise..

also can i pull that thing all the way? Kind of scared to...

Uh, it's the throttle cable.

You're thinking of the throttle linkage, I guess? Every car has one, but on older cars with actual throttle cables like our E30s they're visible linkages. In the days of carburetors back when drivers had to dodge sabertooth tigers, all throttles were comprised of some sort of linkage running from the throttle pedal to the carburetor. These days, most are electronically controlled and hidden inside the throttle body. If you push the linkage to full open with the car running, it's the same as pushing the pedal all the way down. Full throttle. Also, it works with the car in gear as well.
