Hi, I have a problem with the timing on this car I have set it up to my best of knowledge but it still wont fire up. I have tried:
- Replaced the timing chain
- Replacing the valvetronic motor
After 5 minutes of running the engine goes too advanced on the timing and starts rattling and cuts out. After a further rest it will now not fire, could anyone advise?
Thanks.
Are you able to have the codes read? It'll give you a great place to start troubleshooting.

As said in the last post you need to get the codes read using a BMW specific scanner to give you a starting point to sorting the problem. You mentioned timed to the best of my knowledge, did you use the camshaft locking tools to set up the timing ??? . Did you replace the timing chain because you had the common 318i engine rattle as the camshaft control units are a common failure on these valvetronic units. Keep us updated as I'm sure there's many knowledgeable members willing to help
Hi yes i replaced the cam chain and guides, also i used a timing locking set to set the timing, changed the valvatronic motor the two solenoids also i got a auto electrician in to clear the codes and check the electrics he said the electrics were fine and it was mechanical. I have set the trimming up three times and it ran for ten to fifteen minutes then the rattling comes back and no power then stops. but this time for some reason it wont start i chanced the fuel filter all the spark plugs and one coil,This is my first BMW as im a ford man i wanted to try to restore this car as its in good condition for its age also i thought it would make a nice car to run for best taking my family out, but sadly it has only done seven miles in the last eight months i know a little about cars but this has me stumped
