So I was reading through a collectors book I had for e24's and apparently from 11-12/1986 they only made 255 m6's. My car falls into that group I'm 12/86 . Is this true? Is an early build us m6 rare? And if possible how do I find out him many royal blue on lotus cars were made during that time ?
Me E30 87/ 325i + F25 12/ M-Sport + E32 94/ 740i
G/F’s E34 92/ 525iT + F48 18/ X1
I believe that a car made after about July '86 would be titled and sold as a '87 model.

Aren't ALL of the M6 cars considered pretty rare considering they only brought around 1700 total to the US? It would be interesting to have a production numbers breakdown by exterior color and interior color. I am sure my Zinnoberrot/Natur is one of the more common. I have seen several of the blue with white or silver interior and that blue really fits the E24 body style nicely.
There's nothing extra special about early production US versions. The M6 had already been in production for other markets for some time before your car was built. BMW doesn't seem to have been too precise about dates, specs and other details back then. My car was built May 1987 but is a 1988 model.
I've seen information floating around the web about various colors and color combinations. Whether it's possible to narrow it down to the last two months of 1986 with any accuracy is dubious.
My E30 M3 was built 4/87, and it was classified as an '88.

Since less than 6K M6's were made in the world, they're pretty rare in general. 1787 were made for the US if I recall correctly. I don't think BMW ever released records on model build combinations. Royal Blue/Lotus would probably be one of the rarer color combos, though that doesn't really add value IMHO.
Those dates would make yours a big-bumper '87 model - there aren't really any build-dates that are special, except the first few VIN's at the very beginning and very end. of the runs. There is one car that is apparently BMW NA's test-build that is a Euro car with some US equipment (but mainly looks like a Euro) and a US VIN.
Welcome to the E24 community!
