Could be a number of things. Clogged or dirty heater core, clogged water ports inside the block or head, air in the system that was not properly bled out are the main reasons.

Or a clogged radiator. U can try using a radiator system flush to clean it out.

Performing a proper bleed procedure is crucial.

thanks,, you guys, yes bleeding the coolant system is crucial, I agree, done that, many times. Heater, well it works great, coolant flush, possible,,On priority list..
I've replaced the radiator..and honestly, I've replaced the engine..By an ex BMW/MB mechanic. What he found out was, the electric fan(which Ive replaced twice) is not recieving the HI-SPEED pwm signal from the DME. It does work with the AC on. The electric fan does work on normal engine operation, just with temp up and rising, Hi Speed status, does not click on..
I'll be replacing the temp sender/sensor behind the cyl head, next few days, then, if that doesn't work, The BMW shop, diagnosis on their computer and I''l be taking some vaseline..lol

Dsancheze46: Did you locate the source of the problem? I replaced the main belt on my 325i last weekend. Started it up, took for a quick test drive. Overheated quickly (within 2 min); and blew the top radiator hose. Replaced it and still overheated. Going to replace t/stat, and probably radiator and bleed it.
