Picked up at 2006 760Li about 3 weeks ago drove it home from Philly to NYC ( roughly 120 miles) and after i got home and drove around a bit I got a warning my oil was low, I checked and the oil gauge was in the red so i added a quart, and the gauge went back to being almost full ( one bar less if i remember). its been 3 weeks and 2k miles and now i'm getting the low oil warning again, this time the gauge is showing yellow and 2 bars of oil left, is this normal? i'm going to do an oil change this weekend.
I asked the dealer where i bought it from and the service manager said "his guys changed the oil when they got the car but only filled it half way because the didn't want to over fill it"

Added another quart of oil and the gauge was still saying to add another quart, I waited and the next while driving to work the gauge said thr oil level was back to normal.
Is there a dipstick for this engine so I can see what the actual oil level is? Also where is the sensor for the oil level located?

Just drain the oil.
Wouldn't even trust what the dealer put in.
Yeah, I've decided to not believe what they told about the car.
I'm taking to bmw for a full diagnostic, and take it from there.

Ok took the car to my local dealer and the diagnostic isn't very good, apparently the upper timing cover is leaking badly and has to be done, they quoted me $3100 because most of the top end has to come off.
Now I'm not saying I dont believe them but shouldn't I have seen oil on the ground if I'm losing that much oil?

Check to see if the pcv diaphragms are worn or split. If not you could run 10w60 m oil or Castrol 5w50 to help with oil consumption
Next weekend I'm going to do the first oil change and check the covers myself and the pcv's.
Does this engine actually take 9 qts?

Yea, 9 quarts.
If you lost that amount of oil, it can't be just leaking out. Chances are, the engine is burning oil. The cause may be the valve stem seals.
Did you notice any smoke coming out the tailpipe, especially in the morning when you start it or when you take off from a traffic light?

No smoke, I'm currently monitoring and checking via the dipstick weekly to see how fast I'm looking oil. So far it looks like the sensor might be defective, because twice it told me the oil was below minimum and went back to saying its full without me adding oil and when I checked the dipstick the oil was still a little under max

Good for you. If it's the timing cover, then you may need gasket.
