    Shock access

96 convertible 328i e36 - top is disabled until warmer weather and I can figure out what's wrong.

Question: I need to replace rear shocks, do I have to go in through the top well or in the trunk? (Sons car, away at college so I can't check right now)

    Thanks.
    John

Well the trunk obviously has no access to the shocks. The top of ythe shocks are located under a black cap at the bottom of the roof stowage compartment. For this the roof needs to closed with the rear tension bow lifted up.

If the roof is disabled you can manually lift it out and up.

Open the storage cover for the roof, there are two rubber bulbs that cover the tops of the shocks. The shocks come out the bottom. When replacing the shocks, smart money would install a pair of the reinforcing plates just to be sure that the sheet metal does not tear.
