Is anyone running 255's in front, or has anyone tried it?
Currently I have 245's all around with no problem on an 8" wheel. I'd have to go with 8.5" for 255's.
Not so much a signature as a cry for help.
Hold on, saw this in a cartoon once...think I can pull it off.
Why? Unless you are running into traction problems often, going to a wider tire will hurt handling performance
Why? Just thought I'd try something different.
I wouldn't think less than an inch more would compromise me too much (unless it rubs), of course on the flip coin it wouldn't provide a whole lot more traction either, however...
As far as traction problems, well, for normal driving, no. I could go down to whatever for normal driving. It's precisely for non-normal driving that I'm thinking about.
I prefer square set ups so I can rotate the tires from back to front.
Certainly a 8.5 wheel and a wider tire would be heavier, but there also I have lighter than stock wheels/tires now (25% lighter) and changing to the tire/wheel combo I have in mind would still be 20% lighter than stock.

It's more rubber, more traction, more friction. It's just creating friction against the turning forces. As an extreme example a 105 tire will turn easier than a 305. Is the difference between 245 and 255 likely to be noted, no, but also conversely if the traction isn't needed there is no reason to make the change. The rest of the suspension is also not being calibrated to handle any additional grip generated by the wider rear.
IF traction is not an issue, I would not go from 245 to 255 all around. Run the smallest tire in which you can obtain sufficient grip, IMHO.
If you are talking about track or autox events which it sounds like you might be, then throw some 255's on and see how you do. Any negative impact will be relatively minor and likely completely overcome by fresh rubber, be it 245 or 255 in size...

Tire compound will beat size 90% of the time (within reason of course). Id you're not running something like a Michelin Pilot Super Sport (or sticker), then changing compound will give you more grip than changing to a larger tire (without the side effects of weight, frontal area, etc.).

Actually, I was just thinking about my summer tire. My tires now, Dunlop Direzza Star Spec, are kind of worn (might last the summer, might not) and I was thinking of moving to Toyo Proxes R1R (my last 2 sets of summer tires have been Dunlops). As I'm changing tires, I thought maybe trying something different in terms of size and wondered if it was even possible to put 255's on front.
