Your first thing to do is get a code reader or find a shop that is reasonable to scan it. Maybe you didn't need a starter. Who knows? Don't throw parts at it.

sounds like your transmission gear indicator is not working (no display) .... so I am thinking that the no start condition is due to the ignition not knowing that the transmission is in Park where it should be to start ..... can you check this and if you get the transmission gear indicator working then I suspect you will be able to start
... forty-three years of driving before I get behind the wheel of a BMW .... and I am thinking, "why did it take me so long?"
... and then after another 4 years I can't believe that I have two of them !!

You could check the shifter for broken wires or some one needs to check the ews, key recognition system

There is a shift cable that goes from the shifter down to the transmission. Take a look on the diagram within the following link. The cable attaches to the transmission on the driver side. Make sure that the cable has not come loose from the selector lever, (part #5), on the side of the trans. Also have someone move the shifter and observe to make sure the selector shaft is moving on the side of the trans to make sure the selector cable is operating properly.

Correction: I was under my 2005 X3 today and the selector cable and selector lever are on the passenger side of the transmission.

Don't do us like this. What was it?
Plus....there's never been a lot of traffic on the X3 sub-forum, so don't judge the entire Bimmerforums on this experience.
