M-floor mats - someone had to have done this before...

I have several M-logo floor mat sets, they're old but still clean up nicely. Problem is, the rubber backing had dried out, cracked and mostly fallen off but there's still enough there to make a flaky mess in the car. Anyway, today I'm dipping a couple of pliers and cutter handles in a can of that liquid rubber we see advertised on TV while at the same time looking at two front floor mat pieces on the garage floor and an old paint brush on the bench. You already know what I'm thinking and it did work better than I thought it would. Painted the back of one piece with the liquid rubber just to see if it would seal everything in and also provide a good backing. Looks like it did but I need to let it dry until tomorrow just to make sure it won't stick to the carpet. Restored floor mats for ten bucks.

I just broke down and replaced mine with the newer style OEM M mats, which look nicer as a bonus. They don't seem to have that flimsy backing layer that disintegrated in everyone's original mats, and the Velcro mounting system is cleaner looking than the original hook style mounts (and the Velcro plates just pop in the same holes in the floor).

I'm sure you can get them through the dealer, but ECS Tuning and I think TMS carry them as well. I got mine from ECS. They come in grey, black, or anthracite for $110/set. The grey ones I got are the same color as the stock mats I had, but much nicer looking.

Oh, yeah, I've seen those before. Problem is mine are beige and tan. i can deal with the gray if my mat 'restoration' turns to crap.

By the way, as soon as the stuff is completely dry I'll take a pic. Should have take a 'before' pic. Looks good so far.

Did another mat, wire brushed left, coated on the right. If the stuff doesn't work for this at least it makes a nice job of coating tool handles.

Ah, that sucks. Hope the rubber stuff works out for you then. I bet most of the rubberized undercoating type stuff would probably do the trick (I use the 3M stuff on various underbody thingies). It just needs to be flexible enough so it won't crack and fall apart.

Which mats did you buy? I dont see a gray option. Carpet style or rubber? Do they have holes to snap into the floor snaps.

I need to replace mine, wondering if I should go black or anthracite on Dove interior. I feel like both would look good.

PSA: they're on sale for $91 on ECS right now.

Here's my grey ones with my dove interior. Pretty sure the exactly match the original carpet/mats, just less faded.

Actually, that gray isn’t correct. Looks like the correct mats are NLA for a Dove interior. The correct mats match the carpet exactly.
