Hello, i just got a 1988 bmw 325is e30 for my 16th birthday, i am aware of some of the problems, i have just ordered a water pump and timing belt for the car because the guy i bought it from said he didn't know when it was last changed, and im not going to risk destroying the valves and piston, any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

You're already on the right track. If the timing belt service history is unknown, I would do it immediately.

My first old car was a 83 633csi i bought when i was 18. It was rist free and dent free. Paint faded but lots of compliments. Then came along my 91 e30 cabrio. Rusty shitbox that was. When i was at a coin wash a woman tried giving me $5 and didnt want to hear any excuses lol. I helped her clean her rims was easy and didnt make me feel so bad.

Now my current 91 euro model calypso red e30 with gold (bbs reps im a student shhh). Its in immaculate condition and i get compliments a lot. I go to a automotive business school so while i was in a parking lot had a guy jump infront yelling from the top of his lungs " yoooo i have a e30 too bro". Nice guy haha. I love my e30 but still regret selling my shark.

My daily is a white 2015 jetta. Nothing special there.

It says that you don't want to drive the same boring auto-box 90% of the people drive... You, and the car have character.

My oldest son drives his daily and it really is the perfect car to match his personality.
He is safe, dependable and can start a conversation with a complete stranger and makes you feel like you have known him your whole life.

He's currently missing his E30 as it has been parked in my garage waiting for a new set of front lower control arms, bushings and control links.
We changed the oil/filter, brake pads on all 4 corners and new speakers for his birthday. Found the loose bushings when changing front pads.

What it really says is you have too much time and money on your hands so you needed to pick a hobby that takes a lot of both.
If your e30 runs bad, switch to Megasquirt first. Then try new spark plugs, cap and rotor, wires, oxygen sensor, crank shaft position sensor, coolant temp sensor, air flow meter, idle control valve, throttle position sensor, digital motor electronics unit, harmonic balancer, fuel injectors, engine harness...
