How did you get to the electric fan fuse from outside the car??? It's right behind the glove box.

Most people said to lie down, upside down and you can pull it out but there was no way I could get my long scrawny arms inside there to grip it so i just got just outside the passenger door so i could reach one hand in there and pull it out with my fingers.

Yep, it don't compute. The fans fuse is a 50amp fuse next to a 40amp fuse, in a holder behind the plastic relay box, behind the glove box, under the dash, inside the car.

2002+ is a bit different, the twin fuse holders face upwards. Pry at them with a flathead screwdriver and reinsert at an angle, takes about 1 minute total.

Pretty sure even the 2000's have the twin fuses in the same manner. My electric fan in my 2001 M5 (09/2000) had a blown motor. The fuse is right behind the glove box just like in the 02-03 models. Both 40/50A fuse facing upwards and hard to reach. Before I sold my 2003 530i I swapped out the elctric fan into my M5 and popped in another fuse, and it's been working great ever since. Definitely sounds like you've got a blown motor. A brand new OEM fan is going to cost you around $400 or so. If possible I would try and get a used one either from online or from a local junk yard (50/50 chance it might actually work just fine).

Yeah, that's what i'm saying.. if you find the sweet spot the fuse is really easy to get out, i'm jus saying I could not access it lying down upside down on the floor. But anyways, that is what I plan on doing, finding a junkyard fan or something used. This isn't a crucial component that will cause harm to the engine, i've been running this car without an electric fan just fine for the past few months. Thanks again for the input!

Oh and by the way, I did test the fan by d/c'ing the fan and popping in the fuse, all worked fine, no overheating or strange smells. Just need to source a fan now.

Haha, i've used AC maybe 3 times so far this summer. I'm more of a windows down kind of guy.

As long as you're moving and there is a constant airflow to the condenser then your a/c will be working fine. Only in stop and go traffic with ambient temps exceeding 95+ C then your a/c high side pressures are going to escalate and will eventually halt the operation of your compressor. You may also experience rising engine temps too, so be aware of that.

I have no idea. I drove all day today in temps ranging from 60 to 105 F, and I was at a chill 68F the whole time. Lovely.

BMW fans are expensive because they are built with a PWM module controlling the motor. Aftermarket PWM modules are still unreliable and expensive (annoyingly); like $150. Add in the E39-specific fan housing and the fan motor, and BMW likes to charge big bucks for their fans. I'd recommend going with an OE supplier like Behr.

For what it's worth, I got an E39 Behr aux fan from Rock Auto for $180 last year.
