Hey Everyone, been on the prowl for sometime now for a 540/6 and finally found one... after some finagling to just be able to arrange our schedules to see the car I managed to finally test drive it and purchase it. It's a 2001 (sport?) 540 6 speed with 160k. Truth is I'm not entirely sure what I got myself into but I checked the car out on cold start, no rattles, no knocking, nothing to be suspicious of other than a slight rough idle on warm up. Drove the car and it felt amazing and I know what a great and sub par 540 should feel like. Anyways, it has the sport steering wheel, non sport seats (whyyyyy!?) sport shift knob, nav, wheels (style 66) that previous owner replaced with something else. It has automatic rear shade and side window shades. Of course upon parking it in the garage I have oil leakage on my floor so I presume valley pan and VCG's are in my future... Anyways, hope to have a restoration thread going here very soon, my goal is to make this thing mechanically tip top and tastefully modify it when maintenance is 100% up to date. I appear to be 3rd or 4th owner and previous owners have for the most part appeared to have kept up with the maintenance. Interior is (black) 9/10 and paint is nearly 8/10.

Quick pic for now until I wash it:

    Nice!
    More pictures?
    Any plans on the suspension?
Do you like it more than the 530i?
I wish I could afford another BMW...
I can barely afford my lowly 525i... lol.

Haha I will get some more pictures on the weekend when I have some time to wash it and take day time pictures. I drove it home an hour from where I bough it and all I can say is DAMN, I have been missing a lot driving V8's, it's an amazing experience. Plenty of power in all gears. I still plan on keeping the 530 and only time will tell which one will ultimately get sold before needing an SUV (X5). Eventually i'll want to lower this car to about the height of my 530, i might just even steal the 530 coilovers...

Congrats! Try not to wear out your rear tires in 10k miles

Are you keeping the 530 or replacing it with the 540?

Thanks, everyone. No plans to sell the 530 yet, it's still a fun reliable car. I think the best thing is to see how well the 540 will fare for the next few weeks and get a feel for what kind of work it is going to require to keep it on the road.

You will need to get used to the low oil consumption! That is once you fix all the leaks.

All 6-speed cars came with M-sport suspension. The original buyer could specify seating, among other things, so sport seats were not mandatory.

Oil leak at front center comes from the timing case gaskets. Unless already done, the engine is (over)due for new chain guides.

    BTW, what is "HO8?"

No car is due for chain guides until you hear clackaclack. House of 8.

Time to get on Craigslist and look for a grey 530i.

You'll love the fold down seats. You can fit 10 foot long stuff. The rear sunshade is nice at night too for cutting glare.

Yeah my car was a Sport with Comforts. I suspect the dealers asked for / ordered those in a lot of cases. Fat-ass Americans might gripe about the firm bolsters of the Sports ya know. Dealer mindset: "what is going to be easiest to talk somebody into and give me the highest chance of shifting off the lot as fast as possible?" aka "easier to talk a Sport guy into these 'extra special Comfort' seats than to talk a lard-ass into the Sports that pinch his fat-rolls on either side"
