I tried doing a little research, but unable to get clarification. I apologize in advance if this has been beat to death, but i'm just looking for some quick info. I have been away for a little while and not kept up with the 8 series progress, as I have been busy tinkering with my 540i/6.
I'm looking to take my 1996 840Ci from stock and do some mild performance upgrades. Intake/exhaust, engine tune and transmission tune. My question is, what seems to be the best chip/tune for the M62B44. I know there is Dinan, Wokke, Turner, DUDMD etc... I'm just trying to find out who offers the best. I will be dynoing in stock form, and then after the upgrades.
Thanks in advance!
Looks like you have M62 non vanos engine. Not easy or cheap to tune it.
Your best option hands down is to install more favorable differential ratio, either 3.15 or if you want to have a bit more fun 3.64. Keep in mind aforementioned diffs with LS unit are not cheap.
I have 3.64LSD for sale.
Hey OP,
Contact DUDMD for any M60/M62 related tunes. Last I checked, he had a good tune for the M62B44 non vanos. I used his M60 chip in my old 540iT/6 and it put down 282 to the wheels with an intake, x-pipe and exhaust. Yours should do the same or a bit better.
We went through half a dozen iterations until I got what I wanted, but I wanted a perfect chip and at the end I got it. Great customer service on his part. But even his canned stock tune is excellent.

1992 BMW 850i/6speed. Stock as stock can be.
I replaced my Dinan chip with a DUDMD chip and I am very pleased. I swapped the diff to a 3.15, (add 9 lbs), then did the 6speed conversion and then added DUDMD's chip for the manual tans. I removed my cats, and I felt no change in power or sound, so I put a single aftermarket cat 2 in & 2 out (that sheds a few lbs.) and the car doesn't smell anymore. I kept the style 9 wheels, I'm not sure but I think they are forged and since they are the lightest, about 20 lbs. less than a set of M pars, and they use smaller tires, this also saves a few more un-sprung pounds. The trans swap sheds about 150 lbs. and converting to a single battery will drop another 20 more lbs. The shedding of weight is like making extra HP. The less number of pounds each horse has to carry, the faster you can accelerate...period. I believe I dropp nearly 200 lbs. which I think is equivalent to about 14 HP in our V8 cars.
Put in a supercharger and weight is no longer an issue, there's about 100 extra horse.
Shameless plug to OP - if more power is what you seek I've got a heavily discounted brand new VF supercharger kit that should work with your M62 engine with some slight modifications. PM me if you would like more info.
Cool, thank you. Seems like DUDMD is the way to go.
Thanks for the input. I definitely know about the shedding weight part. My back round is more in drag racing. Although not drag racing BMWs. More privy to Japanese and some F-bodies. Sounds like DUDMD is where its at.
That does sound nice lol.
As far as the tunes go, best bang for the buck is what I'm after. Even if that means paying a little more, but getting the best power/torque/etc.. from it. I know there are several chips/canned tunes out there for other vehicles that are several hundred dollars and they are really not much better than stock.

The most Bang for Buck must be a diff change, 3.15:1 works well.....

I sold my 3.64 differential out of my 93 850CI to my buddy who has a 94 840. He's been wearing a permagrin ever since. It is the best bang for the buck, but you won't get to 155 MPH, perhaps 140, but you will get there a whole lot faster! You will end up having to swap out the differential input flange, as they are different.
