    '89 325iX with 5x120 - 16"s with 225/55 rubber, et 20

does anyone know offhand what i'd need for spacers to run the wheels described on a 325iX, aside from adaptors?

That would depend on the offset of your rims too as I believe ix came with 15" weaves stock.
Also, I am sure you may even find an answer with a little search on r3vlimited.com.

i made a thread there, and on an e30 facebook group, forgot to put offset in this one. offset of the 16s are 20, iX weaves are 15" but offset is 41.

You won't need spacers, but you must be very careful with your tire selection. Your wheel will be sticking out further compared to stock setup and you may experience issue with the sidewall of the tire rubbing inner fender lip. 20mm is a lot when it comes to offset. If you are planning to run adapters, you will add the thickness of your adapter to that 20mm offset difference. In short, if I understood you correctly, your idea is not likely to work.
