If it's not one thing it's another. When I'm at a stop in gear (auto) there's a loud metal on metal rattling. If I give it a little gas while holding down the brake pedal the noise stops. When it's in park at idle the noise is not as loud. More of vibration type sound. My guess is engine mount/brace. Seems to be coming from driver's side. Any ideas? I'm having trans issues but I don't know if this would have anything to do with that.

Please include the problem in the thread title. You will get much more of a response to something specific like "This damn car..". or “My battery is dead” or “What is this?”.
You have certainly noticed that this thread with the title "This damn car.." has not been read often so far.

Any leaks at the bell housing? I'm thinking torque converter...I'd bet you never replaced it and it's got some mileage....just a guess, but mounts are where I'd start to look, you're on track.

Took my heat shields off years ago. Can a bracket break too or just basically an engine mount? Should a broken mount be visually obvious? Thanks
Could be a loose/broken exhaust bracket. Turn the car off and shake the exhaust around, see if you can hear anything. The rubber hangars at the rear like to crack/tear over time.

Have someone you trust, preferable someone who does not have an insurance policy taken out on you, keep the car running in Drive while you crawl around under the hood and under the car, looking for the rattle.
Then post your findings.

When I got my automatic m3 sedan it was having a weird vibration at idle. I finally had someone hold the exhaust and sure enough the exhaust was rattling and vibrating, seemed like it was right from the transmission.
