Hello, it's been a while since I've been present here but I figured you guys may be able to give me some advice since my indy mechanic is out of state.
I'm going to smog my car tomorrow or the next day after putting on a new catalytic converter recommended by my mechanic after putting on new spark plugs, air filter, dist cap, rodor, fuel filter amd fresh oil. At the time he recommended that was one year and 5000 miles ago. Since then I've changed the oil once after 3,000 miles. What would you recommend to make sure it passes? I figured driving it on the freeway for 20 miles before I run it through the smog station, but should I also change the oil and plugs and air filter, or call it good since it was done previously 15 months ago? Thanks for the help. The car did sit for 3 months this past summer if that matters
The manual recommends changing oil every 6 months or 7500 miles, whichever happens first. 15 months sounds too long. I would not go 7500 miles on the oil either.
If I were you I'd change the oil and air filter if it's dirty. Plugs should be OK unless they have over 10000 miles on them or you are burning oil. Valve adjustment matters too.
I'd definitely change the oil and check the air filter. If you are comfortable and have time I'd check valve adjustment and spark plugs.

With a new catalytic converter should pass with flying colors till its element is gone or the standards change.
I usually fog the motor some time before testing, helps keep the Nitrogen test Nox's down some, reducing carbon deposits. You could lean A/F mixture to reduce HC's, This isnt germany though where HC's are the focus, Nox not so much, here its HC's and Nox.
