I finished doing timing chain guides and after starting the car I am hearing this noise that sounds like its coming from the alternator. I didn't actually remove the alternator from its mount on the lower timing chain cover.
The noise follows engine speed and doesn't really change warmed up/cold. I don't have any electrical issues so far, but the car is pretty new to me.

I have looked around and it doesn't really match any of the soundbites I found relating to alternators going bad. It sounds fairly mechanical in nature (ie something is physically tapping something else).
Anyone experience this or have any advice?
I'd try taking the belt off and spinning it by hand. See if it has any resistance or makes any noise.

Just did that.
No belt on and the car sounds normal. Pulley has no visible play. Noise is not reproducible with a hand spin at all. No weird noises either. The resistance is about what I would expect out of an alternator, but it's not something I am testing often... If I spin I give it a good spin by hand how much rotation should I expect? I can mark it and test.
In my experience, it should rotate smoothly but have a weighted feel. I guess it's something that's not easy to explain. It almost sounds like a pump type noise though. Like a mix of air and coolant cycling through the alternator. That's about all I got.
