If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue

I don't get it. It makes less power than the stock one did (140 vs 190) despite having literally double the displacement. Reliability and economy aren't any better either so... why? I'd rather see an M50 in a Mustang than the other way around.

Way more low end torque which these heavy cars need.
I've been doing some thinking about a large displacement V8 into a touring. I have a fresh warmed over 460 Ford/C6 on hand.
The biggest problem is that it is about 900# worth. That's one way to make a touring sit lower.

With the BMW handling destroyed, what does that offer that the dozens of Ford station wagons already equipped with the 460 don't?

Well, even with that lump hanging over the front axle it would still be a much more pleasant car to drive and a WHOLE lot easier to find a decent example. Probably 500# lighter than a full size Ford wagon too.
Just pipe dreams right now anyway but having that motor around makes me look for a home for it.

Either way, pretty sure the small Ford was chosen for $ & front sump, plus cheap aftermarket support.
LS, 5.0, doesn't matter when you see the cost of go fast stuff vs. what it costs to make more power from a Bavarian. I know the BM is far more efficient to begin with but as they say and especially with heavy cars there is no replacement for displacement.
    SO, who bought it?

I can get 5 Bavarian liters for about the price of a Ford 302. Aftermarket support is another story however...

The other consideration is simple repairs & overhaul. I can put together an entire Detroit engine for the cost of just a few BMW "tuner" bits.
I don't mean to rip on BMWs just saying how it is.

The online bavarian forums are better than many 'local' shops...

And the aftermarket value of (old) parts is so low, and BMW longevity soooo good... really is no need to buy 'old iron', lol!
Got LSD, Megasquirt coming... and a few manual 'gearboxen'. The M50 should be done this week.

Just like how 550lb M70 swaps ruin E34s, NOT.

E32 would be even better for this.

    Not really.

M70 doesn't really deserve its reputation. Fairly simple understressed design, aside from some electrical annoyances.

Agreed. They are simple but so often are suffering from neglect due to cost of maintenance parts. Buying two distributor caps/rotors sucks until you price a twelve cylinder cap for a Ferrari.
