Question for those that have removed a differential

I have been experiencing some rear end vibrations. Just wanted to know if anyone has ever engaged the planetary gears on their open diff by hand (by moving left and right axle flanges in opposite directions) and felt a vibration?

Is this vibration common or a sign that the planetary gears are bad?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Wouldn't expect the gears to go bad, but you haven't suggested the past history of car use. Bearings might be bad but you should be able to tell, they may grind or feel rough to rotate (probably have to disconnect the halfshafts and dshaft to make that assessment).

AFAIK the diff is pretty robust.
