A sad day for the E38 lover in me...

So, I probably should have registered my profile when my 01 740iL was still running. However, with it now sitting in my driveway unmoved for several months, and the prospects of mounting bills and a truck payment, I have decided that perhaps my E38 should do some good. At least more good than it would sitting in an auto salvage yard collecting rust. That said, I am of a mind to part it out. And would pick others brains as to the best way to go about it. Any and all help would be appreciated. This car has a great many usable parts and pieces that can still be of use to someone, their Beemer, and my ever empty pocket book....

Welcome here. I moved this to the E38 forum. There are MANY members here that have parts from parting cars. You might want to give some detail on the car, i.e. color, is it a Sport, type of wheels, etc. You are too new to post pics but if you use a hosting site like Photobucket, you can post the IMG link in a post and wait for a Moderator to approve it. In general, we are not suppose to have 'classifieds' in the sub forums. This rule has been softened recently so such threads are not immediately removed. Another thing you can do is post a listing in your local Craigslist and post the link in the appropriate thread at the top of this forum.

    What killed the car?

Thank you sir. Yep, kinda new here as a forum member, but have used posts and reference material in past repairs. I was wary of classifieds being a problem, that's why I worded it the way I did. I felt like soliciting advice was a good way to start, and safe. I appreciate you moving it to E38... Why am I not allowed to post pictures yet?

The conclusion we came to was that the timing chain guides wore out, eventually resulting in it jumping time. Unfortunate, that the chain slap noise was originally mistaken for a stuck lifter from cold oil..

New members who have a low post count can't post some stuff. It's an anti-spam, anti-robot thing. I sent you a PM.

The restriction is a spam preventative. Spammers/bot accounts sign up and immediately try to post spam links/pics. I think the threshold is 15 posts but some have luck right away using the 3rd party hosting sites.

Guides are becoming more and more frequent. If the car died while running with this issue, it's done.

Sorry for your loss. But as to the gain... (sorry that was mean, and I'll probably be in the same boat sooner than later.)

Can you provide some details? Thanks

I have seen that before. I have also witnessed people trying to resolve it thinking it was something else and totally trashing the engine on the process. Sorry for your loss.

    From me, to you.

    LOL
Sorry but the last reply was funny. Cars are expensive unless someone else restored them or performed all the maintenance.

I have learned there is always another car opportunity. Take care of your current responsibilities and then get back in the game.

Good luck with whatever you end up doing.

Again, sorry this happened to you. Can you share the exterior/interior colors, wheel type (M-par 18"s?), Sport or not, any options i.e. Winter Package, wide screen nav, etc.?

Black on black leather interior/exterior. I have the 5 point 18's I believe. And I don't believe it's a sport. I'm sorry for the long delay. I forgot my password and haven't had much time. As to the details, I am not by any means the most knowledgeable in the package details. So If you would like more info, including pictures, please contact my personal email cloudjosiah@gmail.com I will do my best to be better at keeping up with this, as I need the extra income. And I would like my glorified yard ornament to serve a better purpose...

Sorry for the loss man, it pains me to hear about that. Theres always the possibility to wait and have the engine replaced or rebuild the top end but of course, that is if you want to spend the money.

If you are set on parting it out, how much would you let all the speakers and twitters go for? With the speaker enclosure?
Can anybody confirm that the 2001 speaker and enclosure would fit the 98' model?

How much for the alarm siren? Located behind the passenger wheel well I believe.

Couple of things. You have a low post count, so maybe you can put tmyiur car up on Craigslist, with photos, and post a link in the interesting finds section of this forum. I've parted several e38s, here's what you can expect

    Trans $300
Cats $250 listed as scrap on eBay
Interir bits $200 total If not an msport
M parallel rims $650 picked up if decent

If car is a short base m sport without black interior $500 for front seats

If black interior, $800 for front seats

Everything else is either a slow grind or garbage.

Crusher will not give you more t ha. $180 even with motor and trans in the car
