I think the team would quit if anyone suggested an auto! The AW71s are bulletproof, but we throw our 15lb of boost, welded diff and solid/poly-everything mounts at it, who knows?!
Our 200kish mileage box made it 4.5 full races before exploding. That doesn't count test laps or the constant donuts one of the guys likes to do. The local Volvo guru recommended running gear oil for endurance racing. He thinks ours got too hot and cooked the overdrive (we found OD clutch material when we pulled the filter). At the last race we had it in 50 pieces at 2am on race day, and thought we were done for. We finally had it back together without OD, but it wasn't what I would call tranny-fluid-tight. There was a lot of welding and drinking involved. We were adding fluid after every fuel stop. Finally it was my turn to drive, and it catastrophically exploded on lap #77 (my 7th lap ). Ironically, I was looking at a BMW for sale last year, and spotted a 240 in the corner of the consignment shop. Turns out the seller's mechanic had a spare tranny that he sold me for $100. Good to go for 4-5 more races (4-5 years in our world).
We're taking a year off from this brick and running a '91 Integra this time around. A buddy of mine paid $400 for it 5 years ago. Perfect interior (when it had one, oh well), everything works and he had a huge stack of receipts. He moved to Panama for work and I couldn't resist.
