Engine misfiring - Fault code interpretation please!

2005 325i running rough. No mods on car. Peake Code reader reports the following"

    2883 Mixture prep Bank 2
    2882 Mixture prep Bank 1
    2774 engine cut off time
    2746 Cyl 2 misfire

So is this a simple fouled plug or something more serious?

    Thanks!

If you brought the car to my shop with those codes, I'd call for a smoke test of the intake system, replace cylinder 2 coil and replace all sparkplugs with NGK BKR6EQUP.

If the smoke test didn't find a major leak, I'd test crankcase vacuum and fuel pressure. But I'd bet on the leak.

Hmmm interesting. We have already replaced the Air mass meter twice first in 2010 and then again in 2015. Shop searched for leaks the last time, and did find one back then. Guess I'll try the plugs first, then coil if need be. Wouldn't there be a fault code if the #2 coil is bad?

Hmmmm; Hawaii member since 2001, 1500 posts, BMW motorsport checkerboard on his helmet.......Do we know each other?

Before replacing your MAFs each time, did anyone do a smoke test? Who are you going to? (A&A in Honolulu comes highly recommended by my BMWCCA/HI (Oahu) friends.)

"Searching for leaks" doesn't do what you need----a smoke test is necessary, for at least 7 minutes, with a pro machine.

(Also, did you buy genuine Siemens or Bosch MAFs?

Yes, if the cylinder 2 coil was failing, or the spark was arcing out through the boot, there would be a fault code. It would say "cylinder 2 misfire". If you prefer, you can swap that coil to another cylinder, and see whether the misfire code follows the coil. But if you're paying a shop to chase a misfire, the labor will cost as much as the coil. If it were my own car, I would absolutely throw a new coil, while I was replacing the spark plugs, if they are not the ones I mentioned, or Bosch FDR7DQP, in good shape.

    Hi Chris
Perhaps we ran across each other while I was moving around with the US Army in the continental US. Several Octoberfests, and HPDEs in Kansas, Texas, Colorado, Atlanta, California, etc....I've been through 2 e36 M3s and now have an e46 M3 thats up for sale. This is my mom's car.
So the previous Indy did smoke test few years ago. I use Motorwerkes, Gerard Simoes. Not sure what machine they use. I did some self diagnostics, switching coil packs and plugs, etc. Determined I had a bad plug and coil pack in #2. Have a new one and plugs on order. We did switch to the BRK6EQUP already in the past. Will use the same again. Funny though that this same coil pack was replaced 4 yrs ago (Bosch newer style). It failed again, while the other OE packs are still going strong. Something else potentially going on here?
    Aloha,
    Bill

Oh, BTW, uncertain if Seimens or Bosch MAFs. Would have to check next time.

    Hi Bill,
I lived on Maui for many many years, taught for BMWCCA on Oahu when there was still a track there. Gerard knows his stuff very well. Still, I'd insist on a smoke test before MAF replacement. (And do you use an oiled air filter? Oil kills MAFs)

    Aloha,
    Chris

That takes care of the misfire, but there's still the mixture-prep codes......

Yah, was wondering about that. Those codes have not come back...yet. Car runs great.
I'm keeping a eye on it.
